Chronologies

God measures time in CHRONOLOGIES ...

  • Chronologies are selective records of time that God counts, or reckons.
  • There are also periods that God doesn't reckon!
  • You need to combine the two sets of records - reckoned and unreckoned - to get a continuous record of time.
  • In some reckoned periods, God adds an extra JUBILEE year every 49 years!

Calendars

Calendars

Chronologies use different CALENDARS at each stage of God's Plan ...

  • LUNAR - months start at a new moon and the year has 12 lunar months. The calendar drifts from the solar seasons by 11 days each year.
  • LUNISOLAR - months still start at a new moon and the year normally has 12 months, but an extra month is added every two or three years to keep in line with the solar seasons.
  • SOLAR - the year has 365 days extended by a day in leap years to keep in line with the solar seasons. Month lengths vary and so months are unlikely to start at a new moon.

The Bible uses a Lunar Calendar until the Flood, a LuniSolar Calendar from the Flood until Jesus, then a Solar Calendar!

The Bible only uses consecutive 30-day months in two periods of judgement on the whole earth - the first 150 days of the flood and the tribulation. Interesting that the Babylonians should adopt this system after the episode of the Tower of Babel (Babylon)!
